The biggest lies about nutrition

Part 2

Last week we saw the 5 Biggest Lies About Food.

Here are the 5 other wrong phrases that too many people are saying ...

6. Eat starchy foods with every meal
If we listen to the National Health Nutrition Program (PNNS), we should consume as much starch as possible each day: pasta, bread, rice, potatoes, legumes ...
We are told that they would be sugars "  complex  "Therefore"  slow sugars  ".
However, this is not the case, most of them are actually fast sugars with a high blood sugar index.
This is the case for potatoes, white rice and pasta.
Always favor starches that have a low glycemic index, such as buckwheat, sweet potato, semi-whole Thai rice, or legumes.
In addition, you do not have to consume it at every meal.
It all depends on your basal metabolism and your level of physical activity.
If you have an important sporting activity,  you will indeed need a large dose of carbohydrates. Starches provide the energy your body needs for exercise.
But if you sit behind a computer all day, eating starchy foods will do you more harm than good and even cause you to gain weight.

So if you want to lose weight start cutting back (not eliminating) starches. The effects of a low-carbohydrate diet will be fruitful not only on weight loss (especially abdominal fat), but also on blood pressure and triglyceride levels.

7. Cut down on your calories
We always hear that to lose weight you have to reduce calories. And as lipids / fats contain more calories than carbohydrates, we advise you to eliminate fat as a priority ... It would make sense if all calories were equal. However this is not the case ... so this is bad advice.
Before reducing the number of calories consumed, you must first be concerned with consuming calories that provide a feeling of serenity and satiety.
And do you know why most strict diets end in failure?
The answer is simple: for hormonal reasons. When we deprive ourselves of food, the body experiences real stress, and when stressed, the body produces more cortisol. The latter is a hormone that increases the feeling of hunger and appetite.
So to "recover  »From the stress that the strict diet has caused him to undergo, the body calls for high-calorie, sweet and fatty foods.
The opposite effect occurs: instead of avoiding calories you are subjected to the torment of temptation.

This is why, if you are looking to lose weight, the priority should not be to eat less but:
eat better: more vegetables, more protein, good fats, less industrial products, and avoid foods with a high glycemic index.
combat stress (you can try relaxation or breathing exercises)
and get enough sleep: lack of sleep causes chronic stress, which also increases your appetite

8. Drink water: even tap water
Water is the most important food for our health.
You have to drink enough every day and above all you have to make sure that the water is of good quality.

In fact, tap water is not what we think it is.
The government assures us that it does not pose any problem and yet the reality is that it contains a cocktail of chemicals that are not reassuring: in the water, there are doses of pesticides and nitrates. Added to this are "  drug residues  That the authorities do not measure.

According to numerous studies, large doses of birth control pills and antibiotics are now found in tap water. These are substances that negatively affect our intestinal flora.
Unfortunately, wastewater treatment plants in France do not purify water from these chemicals. These stations limit themselves to disinfecting it: using chlorine, which still poses a problem, given that chlorine is a toxic substance suspected of being carcinogenic.

And it's not over  : because to get to your tap, the water must pass through pipes. However, the coating of these pipes may contain an endocrine disruptor (called phthalate) or even lead (a dangerous neurotoxic).

There are certainly sanitary standards, but avoid tap water as much as you can and prefer bottled water or install a filtration system in your home.

9. Consume low-fat products
Be careful because some industrial products low in fat should be avoided: fat is often replaced by sugar.
So learn to read labels or if you need any help feel free to ask me I will get back to you.

10. Avoid salt for good health
It is true that too much salt is bad for the heart, but too much salt is also the opposite. Studies have shown that low sodium diets double the risk of hospitalization for heart problems.
Everything is in the measure :)
